Transforming the National Arts Centre

The National Arts Centre (NAC) rejuvenation project focuses on transforming the exterior and lobby spaces into a contemporary landmark and as performing arts embrace visual technologies as a medium for expression, the idea of integrating visuals into the base building design became central to the planning process.

The project inspired the first large scale application of transparent LED in Canada. Each of the five sides of the tower room is equipped with an addressable transparent LED array. Measuring 13.5 meters high by 6 meters wide the custom aspect ratio panels provide individual or stitched images for choreographed communication along the Elgin Street facade. Located on the exterior of meeting spaces the panels automatically adjust brightness levels to compensate for day or night viewing while allowing natural light to pass.

Construction of the new temporary home for the House of Commons is underway in the courtyard of the West Block. The chamber will have the same dimensions and layout as the existing one, complete with tiered seating for MPs and overhanging visitors’ galleries. Engineering Harmonics is consulting on the infrastructure, audio, video, broadcast and control systems.

New tools for creative expression

Toronto Centre for the Arts Main Stage Reconfiguration

A Contemporary Landmark - newsletter-1-image-4

The recently completed Toronto Centre for the Arts renovation saw the creation of two new venues, the 296-seat Greenwin Theatre and the 574-seat Lyric Theatre within the existing shell of the former 1800-seat Broadway-style hall. Featuring backlit acoustic panels the Lyric offers production designers new tools for creative expression while the sound system featuring a left-center-right-line array supports a variety of touring and local productions.

Each year ReNew Canada publishes a list of the largest Infrastructure Projects in the country. Engineering Harmonics consulted for AV for four of the Top 100 including the Calgary International Airport Development Project, the Canadian Forces Base Trenton Expansion, the Union Station Revitalization and the Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower. We are honored to be a Silver Level participant again this year.

Testimonials

We retained Engineering Harmonics because we respect them and we respect the quality of their work—both the results they had obtained on their previous projects and the process they employed in achieving those results.

Bob Essert

Principal, Sound Space Vision

The newly installed system has made an incredible difference in terms of coverage, power and fidelity. It has been well received by both touring sound engineers and audience members alike. The quality of the equipment and install have been rock solid for us.

Doug McKendrick

Production Manager, Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall

Within an hour they knew where my knowledge stopped and where theirs had to start — and they were very, very gracious about it, even though they play on the world stage. They brought world-class knowledge and home-town service to the project.

Paul LaBarbera

Sound and Video Engineer, Bard College
